Acoustic Session Recording

Acoustic sessions demand precision. There's nowhere to hide behind distortion or volume. Every detail of the performance comes through in the recording. GoatHead Audio brings condenser microphones, careful placement technique, and an understanding of acoustic dynamics to every session.

    What We Bring

Condenser and dynamic microphones selected for the source. Proper mic placement based on the instrument, the player, and the room. Clean preamp gain through our Focusrite interface. Monitoring that lets you hear the real sound as it's being captured.

Acoustic recording is about technique, not volume. We take our time with placement to get the sound right before pressing record.

    Best Spaces for Acoustic Recording

Quiet rooms with some natural warmth work best. Living rooms with carpet and furniture absorb reflections. Bedrooms, small studios, even walk-in closets for vocal isolation. Avoid large, empty rooms with hard surfaces. They create too much echo.

We'll help you evaluate your space and suggest adjustments if needed. A few blankets and cushions can make a significant difference.

    Mic Placement for Acoustic Instruments

Where the mic goes matters more than which mic it is. On an acoustic guitar, aiming a condenser at the 12th fret instead of straight at the soundhole avoids the boomy low end that makes home recordings muddy. Moving toward the bridge adds attack and string detail; toward the neck adds warmth. We test positions and let you hear each before committing.

For a fuller picture we sometimes use two mics, one near the neck and one near the body, blended in the mix. On fiddle, mandolin, or upright bass the placement shifts again, and we adapt to the instrument and the room every time.

Capturing a Performance, Not Just a Take

Acoustic music exposes everything, so the goal is a complete, committed performance rather than a patchwork of edits. We set up the headphone mix and the room comfort so you can actually perform, and we keep multiple full passes so the best one carries the song.

Small things matter at this level: a chair squeak, a foot tap, a breath, a buzzing fret. We catch those while tracking, when they are easy to fix, instead of discovering them in the mix when they are already baked in.
